RECENT NEWS
President Trump signs executive order on modernizing America’s water resource management and water infrastructure. President Trump’s executive order formally establishes a Water Subcabinet of senior Federal agency officials to facilitate efficient and effective management and modernization of our water supplies and systems while also eliminating duplication between agencies. “The federal government has the responsibility to ensure all Americans, regardless of their ZIP Code, have access to reliable sources of clean and safe water,” said EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler. “By creating the Water Subcabinet, President Trump is supporting 21st century water infrastructure that will provide all Americans with safe drinking water and surface water protection.”

Advances in children’s health research. As part of Children’s Health Month in October, we’re highlighting key advances in children’s health research. Throughout the agency’s 50-year history, EPA has made significant progress to protect children from environmental risks in places where children live, learn, and play and continually educate the public through the agency’s annual Protecting Children’s Health brochure. “We must keep the rate of our progress in research ahead of the pace of emerging challenges. To do this, we will focus more of our research and attention on what influence environmental stressors have on early childhood development,” said EPA’s Andrew Wheeler.

National Lead Poison Prevention Week 2020. Held annually during the last week of October, NLPPW serves as a “call to action” to bring families, individuals, community-based organizations, state, tribal and local governments, and others together to protect current and future generations from exposure to lead. “In 2020 EPA has awarded or announced nearly $49 million to remove lead in drinking water in schools and day cares, announced a final rule to cut the level of lead in new plumbing material, and proposed a rule to cut lead dust levels on windowsills and floors. Just last week, EPA selected 10 projects to receive funding under the WIIN Act’s Reduction in Lead Exposure via Drinking Water grant program, including selecting seven grantees to receive $22.8 million to reduce lead in schools and child care facilities,” said Administrator Wheeler.

Federal strategy for addressing global marine litter. EPA, US AID, and NOAA are collaborating with the Alliance to End Plastic Waste to implement innovative programs and finance initiatives around the world to provide approaches and tools to countries that are struggling with this problem. Domestically, EPA works directly with states, municipalities, and businesses to reduce litter, prevent trash from entering waterways, and capture trash that is already in our waters. “Internationally, up to 28 billion pounds of waste makes it into our oceans every year, harming marine life and coastal economies,” said Administrator Wheeler. “Marine litter is a top priority for this Administration, and working together with our global partners, we aim to solve the current growing marine litter problem in our shared oceans.”

EPA marks third year of historically high Superfund site deletions. In FY2020, the Agency deleted all or part of 27 sites from the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). This marks the third year in a row that EPA has deleted a historically high number of Superfund sites, sending a clear message that human health and the environment are protected and paving the way for redeveloping these properties into community assets. “Cleaning up these Superfund sites brings real environmental benefits to places that have suffered environmental degradation while also helping move them forward,” said Administrator Wheeler.

Lead poisoning and what you can do:
- Prevent childhood lead poisoning. Each year, National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (was October 25-31) helps raise awareness of lead poisoning prevention and reducing childhood exposure to lead. This year we highlighted the many ways parents can reduce their children’s exposure to lead and prevent the serious health effects of lead.
Learn more about NLPPW and what you can do:
https://www.epa.gov/lead/national-lead-poisoning-prevention-week
- Remember: plan for lead-safe work. If you’re planning a home renovation, look for contractors certified for lead-safe renovation. Lead paint is the main way people are exposed to lead in the U.S. now and lead exposure can cause a range of serious health problems. Lead exposure especially puts young children and their developing nervous systems at the greatest risk. EPA has fined contractors who violated lead-safe work practices that are designed to prevent or reduce lead hazards from renovation or home repair activities, which could cause delays on work at your home – read more:
